Looking to give back to your community?

The Essex Shed Network, in partnership with Chelmsford Diocese and the Ideas Hub, is launching a new weekly Men’s Shed-style community workshop in central Chelmsford to support men from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds. The Essex Shed Network are looking for volunteers for two rewarding roles based in central Chelmsford—Workshop Buddy and Conversation Volunteer.

Whether you’re passionate about creativity or enjoy engaging through conversation, these roles provide a great chance to support others, build new relationships, and develop valuable skills while enriching your own life.

As a Conversation & Community Host Volunteer, you will play a vital role in building confidence, connection, and community through relaxed, friendly conversations. This role supports individuals—often those learning English or feeling isolated—by encouraging dialogue, fostering friendships, and creating an inclusive atmosphere.

As a Conversation Volunteer, you will:

  • Spend time chatting informally with participants to help them practise and improve their English
  • Encourage conversation through shared interests, games, or simple activities
  • Help break down language barriers and build confidence
  • Support a friendly and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels seen and valued
  • Work alongside the workshop team to help participants feel at ease

Skills & Requirements:

  • Good communication, patience, and a non‑judgemental mindset
  • Comfortable interacting with people learning English as a second language

Sessions will run weekly for a few hours in a central Chelmsford location. Volunteers will be offered guidance and support.

If you’re sociable, empathetic, and believe in the power of conversation to build community – we’d love to welcome you to the team!
