Volunteer Warden - Woodham Fen

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Volunteer Warden at Woodham Fen.

At Woodham Fen you can witness the unusual habitat in Essex where there is a natural transition from saltmarsh to grassland, bringing with it an interesting array of plant and wildlife species.

Divided by the railway line, the southern side of the reserve is saltmarsh that transitions into rough grassland. The land was originally donated in the 12th century by the Lords of the Manor to the community to graze animals. Now, Essex Wildlife Trust works in partnership with South Woodham Town Council to manage the nature reserve, which lies within a much larger area of common land.

Overview:

  • Communicate effectively with the Trust’s staff about any issues with the reserve.
  • To assist in the high quality management of Essex Wildlife reserves by regularly visiting a reserve and inspecting the reserve.
  • Dealing with problems as appropriate; talking to people who are conducting improper activities on the reserve, clearing litter or reporting issues to your supervisor.
  • To be independent and go out and conduct inspections when agreed without prompting from a supervisor.
  • Ensure volunteering activities are conducted in a safe manner, ensuring that you adhere to relevant health and safety policies especially lone working policies where relevant.
  • To uphold the values of the Essex Wildlife Trust.

Skills

Special conditions:

  • Must have an adequate level of fitness to participate, this may include walking on uneven ground.
  • Will require own transport to site.

Volunteers need a willingness to be outside for an extended period of time, to closely listen to a supervisor and an ability to work safely with other volunteers.

A good level of fitness is required to be able to work on uneven ground and use handtools safely.
