For over 40 years we have been tape-recording the memories of local people about life in Colchester & District. Because we started so long ago we have memories of life before, during and after the First World War, life in the 20s and 30s and much about the Second World War. We have even got a few memories of Queen Victoria's day.
We now need volunteers to listen to the tapes and keyboard into WORD files the contents of each interview. Some of these interviews last for several hours. Some involve specialist subjects, such as doctors and nurses.
For you there is the pleasure of hearing distant people's personal memories. This can be fascinating. You will be contributing to Colchester's rich history, and the words you type will be read by people for years to come.

Where does this opportunity take place?
Transcribing takes place from your home. There is a short introductory session. You need a computer with a sound facility. If you do not have one, we may be able to loan you one. We hold coffee mornings from time to time for all our volunteers to meet up together. Our main archive is based at the University of Essex’s Library. It may be possible to work there too.
