Volunteer Counsellors and Student Placement Counsellors

We are looking to recruit dynamic volunteers across Essex.

A list of duties are outlined below:

The counselling service offered by Essex ARC is substance misuse counselling, not a generic counselling service; service users who require generic counselling or support with mental health concerns, bereavement etc should be referred to appropriate services.

The role of counsellors in the Essex ARC service is to support service users on their recovery journey by exploring underlying issues related to their substance misuse. Regular review of service users’ progress and signposting them to other support services including mutual aid groups is key in helping service users to take positive steps towards their recovery.

Counsellors will need to familiarise themselves with Phoenix Futures’ policies and procedures. These are easily available in both physical and electronical format (Purple Policies Folder available at each site and on our SharePoint intranet). The counsellor is responsible to offer a verbal contact on their initial session with their client. A guidance will be given in addition to what is required by their university or college.


Supervision will be offered on a regular basis to need the required ethical practice code
Encourage service users to make positive use of local resources
Attend Clinical meeting every 4 – 6 weeks.
Willingness to attend additional training

Co-facilitate group work sessions

Data entry / record keeping on Theseus


The role would be ideal for someone looking to develop their experience in the field of complex needs. The person should have a positive attitude and a desire to learn.

Some other skills / characteristics:

- Non-judgemental

- Supportive

- Good IT skills

- Knowledge of IT programmes (MS Office, Outlook) and a close eye for detail are also required.

Desirable but not essential any experience of facilitating groups, Carrying out risk assessments, buddy working, Admin (data entry).

Essential Qualifications: in the process of acquiring Level 4 (diploma in counselling/ psychotherapy) requiring a placement. A certificate of fitness to practice issued by your tutor.
