If you enjoy tea and cake and would like to help make a difference in your local community, then look no further!
Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for isolated older people who live alone and find it difficult to get out and about by themselves. Each older person is collected from their home each month by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host's home where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and companionship.
We have over 600 groups across the country, including 6 already meeting in the Thurrock area! We are hoping to extend our service across Thurrock and would like to open a number of new groups in the next few years as well as continuing to support and develop our existing ones. We are looking for keen, sociable volunteers to help with both new and existing groups.
As a volunteer host you would hold a tea party for a local group just once or twice a year on a Sunday afternoon. All we ask of our volunteer hosts is that you have a big teapot, a warm heart, the facility to seat 6-8 older guests comfortably, as well as a downstairs toilet and easy access to your home. The volunteer drivers (approx. 3-4) will also join in and assist you at the tea party.
Our monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties are a vital lifeline for our older guests, and our volunteer hosts often say that they genuinely get as much enjoyment from the gatherings as the older people do, and lasting friendships are formed.
Not sure if it's for you or would like to find out more? You'd be most welcome to come along to one of our Thurrock tea parties to meet the guests and volunteers, find out what happens and see what you think - no obligation!
"We have a wonderful group who are cheerful, talkative and have fantastic memories. I think they are an inspiring group of people who make me feel that the future isn't bleak. They may have lost some of their mobility but they are young at heart. Putting on a tea twice a year for them is not in the least onerous. Frankly it's a pleasure I look forward to."
Pauline, Contact the Elderly Host
Due to the mobility needs of our older guests, hosts are required to have an easily accessible home with fewer than three steps, and a downstairs toilet. There is no need for ramps or rails. We are looking for friendly sociable hosts, who are happy to welcome people into their home. Becoming a volunteer host is the perfect volunteering opportunity for those who enjoy baking (but shop bought cakes are fine!) and would like to make a difference to the lives of lonely older people. With such a small time commitment, our volunteering opportunities are perfect for those who lead busy lives.
Cannot be guaranteed as groups mostly meet in volunteers' homes.
