This is an exciting opportunity to meet and engage with people from all around the world; these are the seafarers aboard the container ships which bring 95% of all our everyday goods (e.g. food, clothes, electrical items, cars) to our island nation. The crews will often have been away at sea for up to 9 months with no contact with family and friends and sometimes when they reach port, they don’t even have time to disembark. As a volunteer ship welfare visitor you will go aboard the vessels to facilitate their contact with family and friends via phone top-ups and data SIMs; you will be able to provide a listening ear, someone new to talk to. You will be their “welcome to London”, to show them that they are appreciated for what they do.
You will be based at the QVSR Seafarers’ Centre in the Port of Tilbury which is managed by the Queen Victoria Seamen’s Rest, a charity established in 1843 to look after the welfare of seafarers visiting the Port of London. Over 8,500 seafarers are able to visit the centre at Tilbury each year; for those that aren’t, the ship welfare visitors aim to provide them with the same friendly welcome that they would receive at the centre.
