Shepherd(esses) wanted for nature reserve. We already have a nature reserve (Noakes Grove, Sewards End) with a small flock of sheep that are used to maintain the flower-rich meadows. We have a team of seven volunteers who, on a rota, visit the sheep one day a week each. Visits entail feeding (with hay and concentrate nuts) at some times of the year, topping up water pots and checking that all are fit and healthy. Experienced volunteers get involved in tasks for which training is given: lambing, hoof checking and cutting, moving to new pastures). Shepherdess with young children find visits are much enjoyed by their children.
We have just opened a new nature reserve at Rivermead, Hempstead on the border with Steeple Bumpstead and are anxious to find similar volunteers living in Hempstead or close by who can form the basis of a new "Rivermead sheep team". We have three volunteers already and need another four.
No special skills needed except a driving licence and car to get to Rivermead. Training is given for the more complex tasks but initially the check visits are simple and a single training visit is sufficient.
