SEND in the Dengie is a parent-led charity supporting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, and their families, across the Dengie and surrounding areas.
We run relaxed, inclusive activities where children can take part at their own pace. Parents and carers stay with their children and remain responsible for them throughout the session.
We are looking for friendly volunteers to provide practical help at our activities and events. This could include:
• preparing teas, coffees and refreshments
• welcoming families as they arrive
• helping keep shared areas tidy and stocked
• clearing away at the end of the session
• providing general practical support to the session team
This is not a childcare role, and volunteers will not be expected to supervise children or manage difficult situations alone.
There is no minimum commitment. Volunteers can let us know which sessions or events they are available to help with.
Skills
No formal qualifications or previous experience are needed. We are looking for someone who is friendly, positive and happy to offer a helping hand.
Much of the role will involve preparing teas, coffees and refreshments, keeping the refreshment area stocked and tidy, and helping with setting up and clearing away. Just as importantly, we would like someone who is comfortable chatting with parent carers and offering a friendly, listening ear.
Many of the families who attend face challenges that are not always understood by others. Volunteers should be kind, non-judgemental and able to listen without offering unwanted advice or trying to solve things. This is not a counselling role, but it can make a real difference for a parent or carer to feel heard and understood.
It is also important that volunteers share our neuroaffirming approach. Children should be able to join in at their own pace, without pressure to participate. Parents and carers know their children best and will take the lead in supporting them.
An understanding of SEND, caring responsibilities or personal experience of neurodivergence would be helpful, although it is not essential. Guidance and support will be provided.
