If you enjoy tea and cake and would like to help make a difference in your local community, then look no further!
Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for isolated older people who live alone and find it difficult to get out and about by themselves. Each older person is collected from their home each month by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host's home where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and companionship.
We have over 600 groups across the country, but we are hoping to extend our service in Essex and would like to open a number of new groups in the next few years as well as continuing to support and develop our existing ones. We are looking for volunteer group coordinators who would like to help us to support existing groups and launch new ones as well as overseeing the smooth running of the monthly outings once their group is up and running.
The pivotal group coordinator role involves managing the annual host schedule and liaising with the volunteers and older guests each month to ensure that the tea parties run efficiently.
In addition, the group coordinator should ideally be able to volunteer as a driver and attend each monthly tea party. All group coordinators must complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, and supply two personal references.
Our monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties are a vital lifeline for our older guests, and our volunteers often say that they genuinely get as much enjoyment from the gatherings as the older people do.
We are looking for someone with excellent organisation skills and a friendly nature, who is sympathetic to the needs of older people. Ideally we would like you to have access to a computer and email. However, you may prefer to the tea party arrangements by phone. You should ideally also hold a full driving licence and have access to a car, as you will be required to attend the monthly tea parties. We will ask you to complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and to supply contact details for two referees.
