The Sunday Lunch Club operates on the third Sunday of each month at the Benfleet Methodist church hall and on the fourth Sunday of each month at the St Nicholas church hall on Canvey Island. These dates are occasionally moved if they clash with a Bank Holiday weekend or with events such as Mothering Sunday.
Our clients are local residents many of whom have mobility issues although these are restricted to clients who, where necessary, are able to transfer from wheelchair to mini bus seat – with the norm being walking frames or sticks – many clients being able to get on and off the bus unaided.
We pick them up from their home and take them to the hall where they have a cup of tea, a chat with friends and a Sunday Lunch before being taken home again - for many clients this is the only time they get out. Volunteer drivers and kitchen assistants are invited to join us for lunch as part of our thanks for their assistance.
We have recently lost the services of our lead cook at the Canvey site although we still have a team of volunteers who are keen, willing and able. The cook will prepare a meal for approximately (not exceeding) 40 people including a main roast dinner and a desert. This usually involves purchasing the food (obviously not at their own cost), cooking the meat and working with the team to ensure everything is ready on the day.
The kitchen facilities on Canvey are primarily a large domestic style kitchen rather than a professional kitchen but we have found this to be no real problem. Anyone who is interested should initially contact via Ian Dudley but we can arrange for them to meet up with someone from the existing team. The position is very rewarding in terms of satisfaction but requires commitment to attend one Sunday per month.
Previous experience of running a kitchen preferred.
