Homeless Day Centre Volunteer

This is a great opportunity for someone either with proven experience or is building that experience as a student to contribute to a key local charity. We will work alongside whatever role or studies someone is completing.

References will be provided for the work completed. You will be considerably contributing to a charity working with the vulnerable of Chelmsford. This is an opportunity to do something really useful with your skills.

The postholder will operate within our Café environment that provides food, hot drinks and a clothes exchange within a supportive environment to the vulnerable of Chelmsford.

This role may complete tasks from a long list including food preparation, cooking, serving, washing up, cleaning and tidying and sorting donations. The postholder will integrate into a team and support each other to make the environment welcoming and supportive.

The postholder may complete part or all of the day and could undertake all or some tasks e.g. cook a meal or wash and tidy up.

Working hours are seven days a week, during the week 10:00-17:00 with reduced hours at the weekend. The postholder could operate out of hours e.g. coming in when closed or as part of a team for a monthly deep clean.

Key Responsibilities

· Preparation – Preparing food for cooking and preparing the café before opening

· Cooking – Cooking hearty meals within the kitchen

· Serving – Serving the prepared food and collecting up plates

· Washing up and tidying – Cleaning up and completing the washing up

· Cleaning – Performing a deep clean out of hours

· Tidying – Tidying the building and sorting food donations

· Clothes exchange – Sorting clothes in readiness for people


The ideal candidate will be someone who is willing to consistently volunteer and integrate into the team.

Attributes of the ideal candidate are likely to include:

· Someone who wants to give back some time in support of others

· Ability to show compassion and support others

· Cooking, serving, organising skills, cleaning or other relevant skills but we will utilise the skills you have

· Willingness to understand polices on safeguarding and adhere to what’s required

· Patience and have time for others

· Organised, with an ability to work consistently and to plan/prioritise short and long-term tasks effectively

· Reliable and arrive at arranged times

· Integrate into a team and be able to support others

Availability Details

We are open between 10:00 – 17:00 – Monday to Friday and 11:00 – 15:00 at the weekends. We need volunteers to help each day. This can be for a few hours or for a whole day depending on the availability of the volunteer.
