The Royal Gunpowder Mills is a 170 acre site protected for its’ industrial heritage and natural history. Almost thewhole site is classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). We open to the public to share the exhibitions and offer tours and activities. We run a schools programme that fits with the history of the site and the National Curriculum. We offer hire space and interesting environments for filming. The charity’s aims are to protect, preserve and enhance the special aspects of the site and to share the story of the industrial and social history, the science and the nature.
The Grounds
The site contains many buildings in varying conditions, open grassland and woodland.
It is important to keep the visitor area tidy and safe, access and views need to be maintained for tours and walks. Maintenance is required around the buildings and exhibits. This work involves a wide variety of tasks and is mainly outside.
Enjoy this impressive environment and become one of the team responsible for ensuring various areas of the site are kept at their best. The key areas of the visitor attraction need to be kept litter free, neat and tidy. There are pathways, lawns, exhibition grounds and a playground.
The main tasks are cutting grass, shrubs and brambles, clearing roads & pathways, collecting litter and natural debris. There are occasional projects when changes are made on site or an area is given a fresh look. All work is aimed towards maintaining this important historic and natural site and making it possible for visitors to enjoy the walks, exhibitions, views and events in safety and comfort.
