French/Spanish Language Club – Conversations Volunteer Role
Do you enjoy meeting and chatting with people?
We are looking for friendly, confident volunteers to help run our French/Spanish Conversation Clubs. These informal groups support adults who want to practise speaking French/Spanish in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
What will it involve?
• Helping with the set‑up of the session and creating a friendly, inclusive atmosphere
• Welcoming attendees, promoting the group, and encouraging people to take part
• Meeting and greeting participants and helping everyone feel comfortable
• Supporting conversation activities — either by joining in or leading light discussion
• Using simple themes or prompts to guide conversation (there may be a weekly theme, but it’s not essential)
• Encouraging learners of all levels and building positive rapport with the group
• Directing any library‑related enquiries to staff
• Helping to tidy and clear the area at the end of the session
This is a great opportunity to help people grow in confidence, practise their language skills, and enjoy being part of a supportive community group.
What will you get from volunteering?
• The pleasure of seeing people grow in confidence as their conversational skills improve
• The opportunity to support adults who are learning a new language
• A chance to meet new people and be part of a friendly, social group
• Satisfaction from using your own skills and enthusiasm to support your local community

Discuss with your local library what kind of support they need and what you are comfortable with offering. All volunteering activities are subject to completing a registration form, an informal interview with library staff and two satisfactory references. Please note that volunteers are required to adhere to a dress standard. Library staff can provide more information on this. You will be required to provide documentary evidence (of which you will be advised) of your right to work in the UK. What training and support will you receive? You will receive induction, a welcome pack and specific training for your volunteering role. This may be shadowing or an occasional training session or just talking through what’s involved. There will be ongoing support from local library staff. All volunteers are engaged for an introductory period (usually 1 to 3 months depending on the frequency of volunteering). This is to ensure the volunteer and activity are properly matched and either side may decide to end the agreement at this stage.
