Help a young person learn construction

Established in 2005, Essex Youth Build is a charity that has been helping teenagers gain practical construction and employability skills for 20 years. We work with young people aged 14–19 from across Essex, supporting them through their City & Guilds construction training, Level 1 Health and Safety, CSCS testing, and Functional Skills in Maths and English — giving them the opportunity to become confident, skilled, and employment ready.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team and support learners in our workshop and classroom environments. Volunteers will provide one-to-one or small group guidance on both practical and theory tasks, helping young people build confidence, highlight their abilities, and develop key skills for their future career.

What’s involved:

Supporting 14–19-year-olds with hands-on construction activities

Providing one-to-one help and encouragement in the workshop

Assisting with practical training in areas such as bricklaying, painting, tiling, carpentry, and electrical training

What we’re looking for:

Enthusiasm, patience, and excellent communication skills

A good understanding of manual or DIY activities (construction experience is ideal but not essential)

Experience working with young people (14–19 years old) is desirable

No teaching experience is required — just a willingness to help young people learn and succeed

If you enjoy practical work, want to make a difference, and can spare some time to support local young people, we’d love to hear from you!

Skills

Enthusiasm, commitment and excellent communication skills.

Experience of working with young people (14-19yrs) would be desirable.

Experience of the construction industry and relevant tasks (bricklaying, painting, tiling carpentry and plastering) would be ideal but a good understanding of manual tasks and DIY types activities is essential.

Teaching experience is not required
