Community Support Volunteer - Grays & Thurrock

We are looking for volunteers to support our Community Support service in the Grays and Thurrock area. 

The role of the volunteer can include:
• Visiting a person with dementia on a regular basis each week or fortnight
• Providing one-to-one support to help continue with hobbies and personal interests
• facilitating opportunities for participation in leisure and social activities
• Provide encouragement and assistance to individuals to enable them to to carry out daily activities such as light chores, cooking or shopping, if this is how they wish to spend their time
• Enabling the person with dementia to engage with activities in a safe and enjoyable environment
• Contributing to the development of support plans and risk assessments
• Maintaining accurate and legible written records
• Supporting the person with dementia at home and/or in the local community depending on the activities agreed during the assessment process
• Liaising with and reporting to the Community Support Manager on a regular basis including changes or concerns regrading the service user, as well as discussing personal learning and development needs
• Following service standards, policies and service boundaries

Community Support volunteers provide agreed support to people with dementia in their home and/or local community and help that person to take part in appropriate social and/or recreational activities. Your involvement aims to help people to feel less isolated enabling the person to focus on what they can still do, rather that what they can no longer do.


This role will suit you if you...
• Have good verbal communication and listening skills especially face to face
• Know about, or are willing to learn about, dementia and its impact on people
• Recognise the importance of confidentiality and can show this in practice
• Are happy to volunteer in isolation, yet understand that you are part of a team
• Are prepared to undergo an induction in to the role and attend necessary training and similar learning activities to help you in your role
• Are keen to provide a high standard of service
• Have literacy skills
• Have the ability to volunteer within service boundaries
• Are comfortable following policies, procedures and guidance
• Are committed to inclusion, treating people from all backgrounds with dignity
• Are comfortable in attending future support meetings

Availability Details

Volunteers will need to commit to an agreed number of hours each week or fortnight, usually the same day and time. Ideally you will be able to provide continuity over a minimum of six months. Volunteers are needed that can volunteer at on either Tuesdays or Thursdays or both: • 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month in the morning • 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month in the afternoon
