This is a monthly session (approximately 1,5 hours, day to be decided) that will welcome in people living with dementia; both those experiencing it themselves and their carers.
Over tea, coffee and cake, the Museum will be providing a safe space in which to run object-handling and nostalgia activities. Volunteers will support the sessions by guiding discussions between small groups of guests as they unpack “Reminiscence Boxes” and have conversations around the items inside. There will be monthly themes such as childhood toys, Essex family holidays, Christmas traditions, Chelmsford institutions, and working lives.
This is a lovely opportunity for people to make personal connections to the collections in our Museum, and to share the stories and histories that make our community what it is.
A training session will be held on Tuesday 15th October, 10am with a view to starting in November.
Please get in touch if you are interested.
Experience with dementia would be a benefit, but not essential.Training will be given.
You must be kind, empathetic, and patient.
Good listening skills are essential. You should also be comfortable in starting conversations and encouraging others to join in.
An interest in local history would be a plus.
