The Reading Rooms which is Charitable Organisation was founded in 1864 by a group of local businessmen and shopkeepers in Billericay originally as a literary institution to help educate the working classes. Periodicals and newspapers and books were purchased and placed in the Rooms for perusal for all.
The current building was built in 1886 from public subscription and has been used over the years for a number of different uses.
In 1965 the rooms were registered as a Charity and the current management committee is still made up of local people who are dedicated to keeping the Rooms open for Hire by local residents, other charities and businesses to use and enjoy.
We are looking for further dedicated local people to become Trustees and shadow key positions on the Committee, with a view, to perhaps when able, to replace the incumbent.
The Trustees meet every other month in the Rooms in the evening.
