Building & Site Maintenance Volunteer at Royal Gunpowder Mills

About Us

The Royal Gunpowder Mills’ 170 acre site is protected for its industrial heritage and its wildlife. There are many buildings in varying conditions, open grass land and woodland. RGM welcomes visitors including school groups, general public and group visits. Special interest groups visit to experience and learn about the wildlife and industrial history. Money is gained to care for the site by renting/leasing buildings and hiring areas/buildings for filming etc. It is important to keep the visitor area tidy and safe, views need to be maintained for tours and walks, buildings require constant maintenance and exhibitions and activities created and kept in good order. This work involves a wide variety of tasks, and ranges from basic to skilled.

Volunteer Role

Help with the varied tasks involved in looking after the 170 acre site, its buildings and exhibitions. Assist with projects, clearing, cleaning, cutting grass, repairs, decorating etc. inside and outside. Maintaining this important historic site and making it possible for visitors to enjoy the walks, exhibitions, views and events in safety and comfort.

Help with routine tasks or new projects and put your skills, time and energy to good use.

We do not expect you to take on all the tasks listed so if you think you can help with one or two we still need your help.


As guided by relevant staff, dependent on the time/skills offered.

To assist the Royal Gunpowder Mills staff in keeping the site well maintained & presentable to provide a safe environment and a high quality visitor attraction.

Duties could involve working inside or out of doors, where the need arises.

Carry out minor maintenance repairs

Painting and decorating

Tidying and cleaning,    

Grass cutting and foliage trimming,  

Sweeping paths/roadways and raking leaves.

Helping to set up for events.

To help maintain a clean and tidy environment, including litter picking and emptying rubbish bins, ensuring everywhere is safe, clean and tidy.

Ensuring that all work is carried out in accordance with the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and other relevant policies.

If you bring existing skills beyond those outlined above, the role may be developed to a suitable level.


Ideally we seek someone:

With practical maintenance experience and some basic DIY skills.

Who is able to do physical work inside and outside

With the ability to understand the appropriate use of tools/equipment and other relevant health & safety issues

Able to be responsible for materials/equipment and items used in conjunction with duties carried out.

Who can engage with the visitors in a friendly and helpful manner if approached

Nice to have skills

Experience in working with relevant tools/machinery.

Particular skills e.g. plumbing, building, painting,decorating.

Between 9.30am-4pm Mainly weekdays Volunteers can give a regular commitment or be called on when needed for tasks to prepare the site for specific events or to develop special projects.
