When parents meet with professionals to discuss their personal situation, they may feel intimidated, powerless and find the whole experience distressing. As a result parents sometimes find that they are unable to voice their views. Knowing that someone is on your side whilst attending these meetings can help you to express yourself coherently and create a better understanding.
Parents Aid are looking for volunteers to attend meetings with parents, be a second pair of ears when they may be unable to take in all that is said, or speak on their behalf if you feel that you are unable.
Please note: Due to the popularity and expedience of this approach, Parents' Aid has continued with remote service delivery following the pandemic and currently all services and training is delivered by zoom, or a parallel platform, except where face-to-face service delivery is specifically requested by the family, in which case arrangements will be made to accommodate the particular needs of the case.
Skills
Common sense and a big heart required. Use of own car would be an advantage. No formal qualifications are required. Good listening and communication skills are however essential, as is a genuine desire to work with families in a non-judgemental and confidential manner. Maturity and life skills are welcome, as is an ability to work as part of team.
