Chelmsford Talking Newspaper is a charity which converts local newspapers (predominantly The Essex Chronicle) into an audio format so that blind and partially-sighted people can keep up to date with local events. The recordings are distributed by post on MP3 sticks and through the British Wireless for the Blind phone/mobile App, as well as on our website. The recording is also transmitted by Chelmsford Community Radio.
We are short of trained volunteers to operate the Technical element of recording Chelmsford Talking Newspaper. A team of four readers, under the supervision of an Editor, read the contents of the local newspaper while a technician controls the recording quality and length of the recording, noting any issues.
Following the reading, the Technician cleans errors from the file and prepares the master audio files for conversion to MP3 sticks, our own website and transmission by Chelmsford Community Radio. The technician then duplicates the MP3 sticks for distribution by the Administration Team the next morning.
The Technician usually arrives at the Studio at about 6 pm to prepare for the recording. The recording element starts at 6:30 pm and lasts for about 90 minutes. The file manipulation/copying occupies between 1-2 hours depending on the quality of the recording, the willingness of the hardware to co-operate and the quality expectations of the Technician.
There is no internet connection in our Recording Studio so Technicians usually take the files home to upload to our website/BWBF and CCRadio. The uploads should be completed before lunch the next day (Friday).
Full training will be given, volunteers should be comfortable using a PC/mouse and be reliable.
A team of technicians share the recordings by rota - about once a month.
Volunteers aged under 18 must be accompanied by an adult for insurance and safeguarding purposes.
The studio is based in Writtle and volunteers need their own transport as the final bus departs before you finish..
