Suzannah’s Volunteering Story

2 April 2025

Suzannah, 37, works for Essex Digital Services at Essex County Council and lives in Chelmsford with her partner and three rescue pets. She volunteers with Olio, a sharing app dedicated to reducing waste by redistributing food, furniture, and clothing within local communities. Since joining Olio in early 2023, she has taken on six regular weekly collections from businesses like Tesco, Pret A Manger, and Iceland, ensuring surplus food is shared rather than wasted.

A selection of groceries on a kitchen counter, including bread, rolls, sushi, salad, and sandwiches. Items are sorted in blue crates with handwritten labels and yellow discount stickers.

For Suzannah, the best part of volunteering is knowing she’s making a tangible difference—both in reducing food waste and helping households access free food during tough times. She encourages others to explore Olio, not just for receiving food but also for sharing unwanted household items. Her experience has been an eye-opener to the vast amount of food waste from supermarkets and cafes, and she’s proud to be part of a movement that’s tackling this issue head-on.

Suzannah is a volunteer registered with Basildon, Billericay & Wickford Volunteer Network. Read her story in full here.
