Stow Maries Seeks Volunteers to Preserve Site

26 March 2025

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is seeking more volunteers to help preserve this unique “last of its kind” site. Located near Maldon, this museum is the only remaining First World War aerodrome still operational worldwide, and it has remained largely unchanged since its construction in 1916, nestled within a peaceful wildlife habitat.

A blue tractor with large tires is mowing grass in front of a building with a weathered roof. The sky is clear, and a person is visible in the cab.Four men work together to construct a wooden frame outdoors. They are dressed in work clothes, embodying teamwork and focus, surrounded by trees and tools.

The museum runs a Queen’s Award-winning volunteer program, the highest honor for local volunteer groups in the UK, alongside the MBE for volunteer groups. Around 140 volunteers currently support the museum, contributing to various tasks essential for its operation and preserving the site’s historic buildings.

Volunteers collectively contribute 30,000 hours each year, helping maintain 20 Royal Flying Corps buildings that have stood the test of time. Stow Maries is looking for individuals with diverse skills to ensure the site continues as a vital center for volunteering in Essex.

Volunteers participate in all aspects of the museum, including trusteeship, curatorial work, site maintenance, catering, retail, visitor support, and events. If you’re successful in your application, you’ll join a passionate and supportive community dedicated to preserving the site’s history and future.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the aerodrome, and without their help, it would not be possible to continue its work.

Stow Maries are looking for a number of volunteers to cover a range of roles.
