Stephen’s Story

19 September 2015

On retiring as a chartered engineer Stephen wanted to put something back into his local community.  After registering with the Chelmsford Volunteer Centre he began volunteering as a driver with  The J’s Hospice.  Since then Stephen has received J’s Ambassador training and fulfills several volunteering roles within The Js Hospice including driving, monthly checks and arranging cleaning of the Wheelchair Adapted Vehicle, giving presentations and helping with the organizing of the annual ‘Pedal for The J’s’ cycle event and the Chelmsford Marathon.

I enjoy every aspect of my involvement with The Js.  It is very varied!  I am working with a great bunch of clinical and fundraising staff as well as fellow volunteers and J’s families.

Besides his volunteering roles at J’s, Stephen continues to be involved with engineering by volunteering with the Institute of Engineering and Technology.   He is an elder at a local Chelmsford evangelical church and a lay preacher and provides lots of babysitting for his grandchildren.

The J’s volunteers come from all walks of life and bring vital skills, interests and individual experiences to the patients.  There are currentlya variety of volunteering roles available at The J’s Hospice but in particular there is a need for Marshals and Event Volunteers for The J’s Chelmsford Marathon on 18th October 2015.   Click here for details
