My journey began when I moved to Essex two years ago. Whilst unpacking from the move I slipped off the bottom step of the stairs, rupturing my Achilles tendon; which led to a huge operation and over a year off my feet! This road took me to living in a Greenfields home and receiving a flyer advertising a chair-based exercise (CBE) class in Halstead, the town I’d just moved to.
As I was still unable to do most forms of exercise, I immediately volunteered to join the class as a ‘buddy’ to the class leader – helping out wherever I could. I really enjoyed the class, the participants were lovely and it was perfect for my own physical needs. My physiotherapist even commented on the increased muscle mass in my leg after only a few weeks at the class.
After a few months of being a ‘buddy’, Greenfields offered to give me the necessary training to become a Chair-based Exercise Leader – free of charge! I grabbed this opportunity with both hands and became qualified towards the end of 2015. Earlier this year I took over the leadership of the Halstead class and have recently been part of the launch of the new class at Braintree Sport & Health Club. Both are great fun and going very well!
“I am so pleased that Greenfields has given me the opportunity to improve my health, learn new skills and meet so many new people.”
The benefits of CBE are enormous! One lady couldn’t get in and out of a car when she started, another couldn’t open jars and bottles, and another couldn’t get out of a chair unaided – now they can do it all! In fact I believe so passionately in CBE that I have started my own business called LifeLong CBE, offering the programme in private assisted-living facilities, day centres, and residential homes – any place where a few people want to gather together, have a laugh, improve their fitness and move to music.
