A Beginner’s Guide to Making a Difference in Essex

Volunteering is more than giving your time – it’s about making a difference in your community, meeting new people, and gaining valuable skills. Whether you’re looking to support a local charity, help young people, or simply give back, Essex offers countless opportunities through Volunteer Essex.

1. Think About What You Want to Give

Before you search for a role, reflect on:

Your interests
Do you enjoy working with people? Animals? Historic sites? Outdoors?

Your skills
Are you good at organisation, communication, technology, caregiving, or fundraising?

Your availability
How much time can you offer—weekly, monthly, or occasionally?

Understanding these helps you choose opportunities that you’ll enjoy and stick with.

2. Explore Volunteering Opportunities in Essex

The easiest way to find a role that fits your interests is to browse local listings. Volunteer Essex provides a searchable directory of volunteering opportunities across the county, making it simple to find roles based on location, time commitment, and cause.

As you explore opportunities, consider:

  • Whether the role suits your schedule
  • What training or experience is required
  • If you prefer remote or in-person volunteering
  • If the organisation aligns with your interests
  • Use the search tool to filter by postcode, interests, or activities.

3. Register an Account / Your Interest

If it’s the first time you’ve visited our website, you’ll first need to ‘register an account’. Once this is done you can register your interest for any volunteering roles that appeal to you.

We recommend you register for no more than three roles at a time.

4. Contact from Organisation

Your details will be passed on to the organisation and they will be in touch directly. They will go through the volunteer recruitment process as well as answer any questions you may have such as:

  • What will the regular duties be?
  • Is training provided?
  • What is the expected commitment?
  • Are there any requirements (e.g., DBS checks)?

If you have any questions whilst you’re waiting to be contacted, or if you’ve not heard anything after a couple of weeks, then contact your local Volunteer Centre.

5. Get Started!

Once you’ve gone through their volunteer recruitment process, and you and the organisation decide you’re a fit, and you’ve completed any necessary training and induction process then you’re ready to get started!

Volunteering is a rewarding experience. You’ll meet new people, gain experience, and make a positive impact in Essex.
