Home-Start Essex

3 September 2020

Home-Start Essex are actively recruiting for volunteers for various roles in all the areas where they offer support.

Home-Start Essex is a leading family support charity working across Essex to build the confidence and skills of parents/carers to achieve healthy and positive outcomes for children. Their work comprises a long-established volunteer home visiting service, offering emotional and practical help to families experiencing difficulties, alongside a range of family groups, well-being programmes, courses and events.  They work with families with at least one child under the age of eight. What makes the charity special, is that all of their volunteers have lived experience as parents/carers themselves.

Home-Start Essex have continued to support families during the COVID-19 pandemic.  They are offering phone support to all families that had previously received face to face support in the form of Home-Visiting, Wellbeing Groups, Family Groups or Fitness & Fun.

During the last year, Home-Start Essex volunteers have supported 589 families struggling with isolation, mental health difficulties, learning difficulties, illness and child behavioural issues but there are still many families that would benefit from their support and the charity want to do even more to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable families in Essex.

The charity has adapted their services during COVID-19 and for the time being face to face delivery for groups and home-visiting has ceased.  However volunteers can still support families over the phone by being a Telephone Befriender and the charity is keen to keep training Home-Visiting, Group & Creche volunteers ready for when they are able to deliver face to face services.

Family support volunteers all have parenting experience or experience of working with families and children – they come from many different backgrounds and vary in age. They all share that common goal of wanting to give something back to the community.  They support families by offering emotional support and guidance as well as help with school readiness. This friendly parent-to-parent model is a simple yet effective way of enabling families to get back on track.

As a professionally trained volunteer, you will make a long lasting difference to families who need a helping hand. The benefit to children is long-term; reduces the risk of problems escalating in the future and ensures they have a happy and secure family life.

Your offer of time and support, as a volunteer, can mean the world to a family. Becoming a parent, whether its the first or the fourth time, can be an isolating experience. There are so many unspoken pressures that we all need help with from time to time.

The Home-Start Essex CEO says “as a family support charity we are reliant on the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and I would encourage you to consider volunteering”.

Volunteering will not only change families’ lives; it will change yours!
