Get Online Week 2020

1 October 2020

In 2020 ‘Get Online Week’ is taking place from 19th to 25th October so now’s the time to get online!

In 2019 the Get Online Week campaign reached more than 56,000 people at 4,000 events. However, this year’s campaign is going to be a little bit different. With the country still responding to the coronavirus pandemic, organisations won’t be asked to hold large events in local communities and invite lots of people into public venues.

Instead, Get Online is asking you to help people safely, whether that’s over the phone, using digital tools like video calls, or in person on 1-1 basis but only when and where it’s safe to do so.

Volunteer Essex would like to use this opportunity to promote some of the ways in which volunteers can support digital inclusion either through supporting others to learn or by helping charities through digital volunteering.

We’ve included some examples of digital volunteering roles but you can also search using key words such as ‘digital’ or ‘computers’ or use the “Computer, IT and Websites” search option in the activities list.

Sharing Digital Skills

A number of opportunities are available across Essex for digital support volunteers.  Typically these volunteers support others to get online through bespoke one-to-one or workshop style support and helping them to learn what is right for them.  This could be how to video call their family;  stay safe online;  carry out their weekly shop online; access health services online; or internet banking.

Some examples include:

Supporting Charities

Volunteers with digital skills can support charities with managing their IT systems or through digital volunteering such as social media.  Some of these roles can be carried out from home.  Here’s a few ideas:
